How to reduce the smell of TPR injection molding toys?

Thermoplastic elastomer TPE/TPR toys, based on SEBS and SBS, are a kind of polymer alloy materials with general plastic processing properties but rubber properties. They have gradually replaced traditional plastics and are the preferred materials for Chinese products to go abroad and export to Europe, America, Australia, Japan and other places. It has good tactile elasticity, flexible adjustment of coloring and hardness, environmental protection, halogen-free, non-toxic and tasteless; Anti slip and wear resistance, dynamic fatigue resistance, excellent shock absorption, good UV resistance, ozone resistance and chemical resistance; During processing, it does not need to be dried and can be recycled. It can be either formed by secondary injection molding, coated and bonded with PP, PE, PS, ABS, PC, PA and other matrix materials, or formed separately. Replace soft PVC and some silicone rubber.

The smell emitted by TPR toys is due to many reasons, including the machine, operating steps, and operating methods. It is inevitable that TPR will have a smell, but we can reduce the smell so that people will not feel bad, so that everyone can accept it. Different manufacturers have their own formulas, and the smell produced is also different. In order to achieve light smell, it requires perfect combination of formula and process to have a good performance.

1. Formula

Most of the toys are made of TPR materials with SBS as the main substrate. SBS should be considered in selection. SBS itself has smell and the smell of oil glue is bigger than that of dry glue. Try to use K glue to improve the hardness, reduce the amount of PS, and choose the oil with high flash point of paraffin wax. The impure white oil will also have a certain smell after heating, so it is recommended to choose the products from regular manufacturers.

2. Process

TPR figurine products with SBS as the main substrate should strictly control the process. It is better not to use high-speed mixing drums and horizontal ones for mixing materials, and the time should not be too long. Generally speaking, the processing temperature should be controlled as low as possible. 180 ℃ in the shear section and 160 ℃ in the later sections are enough. Generally, SBS above 200 ℃ is prone to aging, and the smell will be much worse. The prepared TPR particles should be cooled as soon as possible to volatilize the odor, and ensure that there is no much heat during packaging.

3. Subsequent processing

After the toys are cooled by TPR injection molding, do not pack them immediately. We can let the products volatilize in the air for about 2 days. In addition, essence can also be added during the injection molding process to cover the taste of TPR itself.
